It’s time for the second round of our Dead Old School Izakaya Event, with all new dishes and drinks!
Take a step back in time with us to the origins of the modern-style Izakaya we all know and love. Izakaya is written with the kanji 居酒屋. 居 means “location/to be,” 酒 means “alcohol,” and 屋 means “store.”
The first Izakaya’s weren’t restaurants as we know them today, rather, they were 酒屋 (sakaya), liquor stores that provided the local neighbourhood with essentials such as rice, soy sauce, mirin, flour, and, of course, alcohol. Restaurants weren’t as plentiful as they are today, so locals gathered at their neighbourhood Sakaya to relax after a hard day’s work, gossip with friends, or take a small break from stressful family life.
Being a liquor store often meant they didn’t have access to an actual kitchen. However, in the true Japanese spirit of おもてなし (roughly translated as “hospitality”), they still wanted to provide their guests with comforting food to ease their daily struggles. Using canned goods, portable stoves, and limited ingredients, they created simple yet delicious dishes that have almost been forgotten by history and are rarely found in Izakaya’s today, even in Japan.
For our Dead Old Izakaya Event, we want to return to our Izakaya roots and give you a glimpse back in time to the origins of Izakaya.
This menu might not be for everyone. The flavours of both the food and drinks are rough, aggressive, and unrefined by today’s standards. But what they lacked in modern comforts, they made up for with creativity and a deep knowledge of their ingredients.
